The developers have unveiled the complete roster of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, featuring seven fully playable characters and one dedicated to exploration. Among the new additions are Monoco and Esquie.

Monoco, the team's "friendly and bloodthirsty Gestral," is a being that thrives on combat and sees competition as a form of meditation. With the unique ability to transform into defeated enemies, Monoco adds an exciting layer to combat by harnessing the powers of fallen foes. Unaffected by the Paintress's influence, Monoco joined the expedition with keen interest in the battles ahead.

Esquie, on the other hand, is a living legend known as the oldest and strongest being in the world. While Esquie takes a more supportive role in combat, this character is crucial for unlocking various locations across the open-world map by collecting special stones. These stones not only open new areas but also unlock new abilities for the team.

The other playable characters were previously introduced on October 16, 2024, via a YouTube video. They include Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso. Despite their diverse personalities and motivations, these characters have united with a common goal: to break the cycle of death.

Turn-Based Combat Innovation and Deep Character Customization

Sandfall Interactive is committed to making Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 more than just visually appealing by revitalizing the classic turn-based RPG combat system, as highlighted in an Xbox Wire article on January 23, 2025.

"We didn’t want the game to just be a pretty face," stated CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche. "We wanted it to be like a game that feels like a real game. So every character has their own playstyle and you can really play them in a lot of different ways – but they also feel very different from each other, and they all have their unique mechanics and their unique skill tree."

To enhance the combat experience, the game incorporates a real-time element into its turn-based system, allowing players to dodge enemy attacks or execute powerful parries for massive damage. Players can also unleash devastating attacks by pressing specific buttons. This innovative mechanic, dubbed the reactive turn-based system, caters to a range of skill levels, with adjustable difficulty settings that modify the parry and dodge windows.

The game also offers extensive character customization options. Each character boasts unique mechanics and skill trees, such as Lune's ability to accumulate a resource called "Stain" to enhance her abilities. Players can also gain Luminas, passive effects obtained by evolving "Pictos," modifiers linked to equipment, after four battles. By transforming Pictos into Luminas, these effects become permanent, offering numerous ways to tailor each character.

With such deep customization, players can experiment with hundreds of different builds to match their preferred playstyle through Luminas, unique skills, and abilities. The reactive turn-based system introduces a fresh perspective on traditional combat mechanics, challenging players' strategic and reflexive skills alike.
