Application Description

The traditional Khmer board game, known as Ouk Chaktrang (អុកចត្រង្គ), is a beloved pastime among Cambodians. The term "Ouk" is thought to originate from the sound produced when a chess piece is moved to check the opponent's King, and it's a rule in the game that the player must verbally announce "Ouk" when checking the enemy King. The name "Chaktrang" is more formal and traces its roots back to the Sanskrit word Chaturanga (चतुरङ्ग), reflecting its Indian origins.

Similar to international chess, Ouk Chaktrang is a two-player game. However, in Cambodia, it's common for the game to be played with two teams, adding an extra layer of excitement and social interaction. Cambodian men often gather to play Ouk Chaktrang in local barbershops or men's cafes, making it a communal and entertaining experience.

The ultimate goal of Ouk Chaktrang is to checkmate the opponent's King. The decision on who moves first is typically agreed upon by the players before the start of the game. In subsequent games, the privilege to move first is usually granted to the loser of the previous game. In the case of a draw, the players mutually decide who will have the first move in the next game.

Another popular Cambodian chess game is Rek. For more information, please see the section on the Rek game.
