by Gabriel Apr 24,2025

Civilization 7, developed by Firaxis, is set to receive its crucial update 1.1.1, coming at a time when the game is struggling to attract players on Steam. With a 24-hour peak player count of 16,921, Civilization 7 fails to make it into Steam's top 100 most-played games. In comparison, the older Civilization 5, released in 2010, boasts a higher peak of 17,423 players, while Civilization 6, released in 2016, significantly outperforms with 40,676 players.

In a Steam post, Firaxis has outlined several "additions and refinements" for Update 1.1.1, which include:

  • Quick Move Functionality
  • New Natural Wonder Mount Everest
  • Additional UI Updates & Polish
  • Settlement & Commander Renaming
  • And more!

Lead designer Ed Beach provided a detailed walkthrough of these changes in a video, with full patch notes expected soon.

Civilization 7 Update 1.1.1 Patch Notes:

Quick Move Functionality: Now an optional setting in the game's menu, Quick Move allows units to reach their destination instantly, speeding up gameplay.

New Start Position Option: The default setting for single-player games has been updated to "Standard," offering more varied and less predictable continents, similar to Civilization 6. Multiplayer games retain the "Balanced" setting for consistent maps.

Settlement & Commander Renaming: Players can now rename their settlements and commanders, and restart the game to find the perfect first settlement location, similar to Civilization 6.

UI Improvements: Enhancements include a persistent city and town panel when purchasing items, new notifications for city attacks, indicators for crises, and improved resource tooltips. Significant pacing changes have also been made.

New Content: Alongside the update, Bulgaria joins Nepal and the new leader Simón Bolívar in the paid Crossroads of the World Collection, available from March 25.

Despite these updates, Civilization 7 has faced criticism from series veterans due to its new mechanics and has received a 'mixed' user review rating on Steam, along with a 7/10 from IGN. In an interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the negative feedback but remains optimistic about the game's future, citing early performance as "very encouraging."

For players looking to master the game, resources are available to help achieve every victory type in Civilization 7, understand the significant changes from Civilization 6, avoid crucial mistakes, and learn about map types and difficulty settings.
