Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Writer Hints

by Camila Apr 26,2025

Exciting news for Star Wars fans: Shawn Levy, the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine, is still hard at work on his upcoming Star Wars film. The project's writer, Jonathan Tropper, recently shared some reassuring updates with Screen Rant, expressing his excitement and hinting that the film might be closer to release than we think. "I am [excited] too," Tropper said. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

While details about the movie remain largely under wraps, we do know it will take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy provided some context on the film's timeline during a February interview with Deadline. "That's also in the future," she stated about Levy's project. "It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker universe.

Kennedy also confirmed that the movie will hit theaters after 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Adding to the excitement, it's reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film.

Tropper's positive outlook suggests that things are progressing well for Levy's project. However, fans will need to be patient, as the earliest release is expected to be in the last quarter of 2026, or possibly even 2027.

Since the release of the critically panned Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has not released any new Star Wars films. During this period, several planned projects were canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie initially scheduled for late 2026 was removed from Disney's release calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in the Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The latter will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey, set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has faced several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently leaving after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a central figure for Disney's future Star Wars plans, with reports indicating her involvement in multiple upcoming films.

Beyond these projects, Disney has more Star Wars content in the pipeline. Last year, it was revealed that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will write a new trilogy, which is not a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, contrary to earlier rumors.

The next Star Wars property to arrive on screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode premiere.
