Ranking the best comics of 2024: Marvel, DC, and All-In-Ones

by Hunter Apr 24,2025

In 2024, readers found comfort in familiar narratives, yet many of these stories were exceptionally well-crafted and innovative. Navigating the vast array of weekly comics from major publishers, alongside the diverse graphic novels available across various imprints, can be daunting. Here's a curated list of our favorite comics from 2024.

Before diving into the list, a few points to note:

  • The focus is primarily on the Big Two (Marvel and DC), with some near-superhero titles included.
  • Comics must have at least 10 issues to be considered. Therefore, new titles like Ultimates, Absolute Batman, the X-titles from the "From the Ashes" relaunch, and Aaron's Ninja Turtles are not included.
  • The entire run of each comic is evaluated, not just the issues released in 2024, even if it spans multiple titles. Exceptions are Jed McKay's Moon Knight and Joshua Williamson's Robin.
  • Anthologies, such as Action Comics and Batman: The Brave and the Bold, are excluded due to their varied authorship.

Table of Contents

  1. Batman: Zdarsky Run
  2. Nightwing by Tom Taylor

Batman: Zdarsky Run

This series teetered on the edge of mediocrity, but its technical prowess saved it from being forgettable. The fight against the wrong Batman was uninspired, except for the intriguing neuro-arc with the Joker, which was a highlight amidst the otherwise lackluster narrative.

Nightwing by Tom Taylor

Had Nightwing concluded 20 issues earlier, it might have secured a top spot on this list. However, the series' final stretch was marred by too many filler issues. Despite this, Tom Taylor's run had its moments of brilliance, though it ultimately settled into the realm of typical DC ongoing series of average quality.

Blade + Blade: Red Band

While the movie languished in development hell, the comic filled the void perfectly, delivering a thrilling, action-packed experience that capitalized on Blade's Daywalker persona.

Vengeance of the Moon Knight + Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu

Moon Knight's year was tumultuous. Revived prematurely, the series failed to develop its new characters and arcs effectively, leaving much to be desired. Despite this, there's hope that Jed McKay's ongoing series will redeem the character's narrative.

Outsiders

This series, a reimagining of Planetary, integrates seamlessly into the DC Universe. While its meta-commentary can feel heavy-handed at times, it remains a respectful homage to its predecessor.

Poison Ivy

Poison Ivy's ongoing soliloquy has spanned over 30 issues, a testament to its enduring appeal. The series oscillates between captivating and skippable, yet its unique psychedelic-astrosocial charm is undeniable.

Batman and Robin by Joshua Williamson

Williamson's return to Damian Wayne introduces new challenges, including the trials of school life. While it doesn't reach the heights of his first Robin series, it remains a compelling exploration of growth, father-son dynamics, and self-discovery, enhanced by the addition of the Robinmobile.

Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver

An unexpected gem, this series offers a cozy, beautifully crafted narrative centered around Wanda's Emporium. Its charm lies in its simplicity and heartfelt storytelling.

The Flash Series by Simon Spurrier

This series demands a committed reader, with its deliberately complex narrative. While it can be challenging, those who persevere may find rewards in its unpredictable journey.

The Immortal Thor by Al Ewing

Al Ewing's name alone keeps readers hooked, despite the series' slow pace and heavy reliance on past references. The hope is that Ewing's intricate storytelling will eventually culminate in a satisfying payoff, supported by stunning artwork.

Venom + Venom War

This series is pure, unadulterated chaos—devastating yet inspiring. Its re-readability speaks volumes about its impact and allure.

John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America

The UK segment of this series is a masterpiece, with standout elements like the mermaid and unicorn. The US segment, however, delves into overwrought themes of freedom and law. Despite its flaws, Spurrier's characterization of Constantine remains exceptional, ensuring the series' memorable moments will endure.

Ultimate X-men by Peach Momoko

This manga-inspired take on the X-Men, blending psychological horror with superpowered girls, is a remarkable achievement. Peach Momoko's consistent monthly releases add to its allure, making it a standout series of the year.
