Pokémon TCG Pocket Players Amazed by Cards Featuring Game Boy Locations

by George Apr 23,2025

Players of Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket have been captivated by the card art for months, and now they're discovering hidden details that link some of the monsters directly to the iconic Game Boy games. The excitement began over the weekend when Reddit user asch_win highlighted a Spearow card featuring several familiar landmarks. The Normal/Flying type Pokémon is depicted amidst grass, a fence, trees, and two distinctive buildings. Asch_win pointed out that the purple and yellow building in the background is none other than the Celadon City Department Store from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. To the left of Celadon City lies Route 16, known for its fenced-in grassy area where players can encounter Spearow.

It's clear that developers Creatures Inc. and DeNA meticulously crafted these cards to pay homage to the classic games that propelled Pokémon into a global phenomenon. The fun doesn't end with Spearow; Reddit user jteede discovered further connections to the early titles, such as a full-art Diglett card situated just East of Vermillion City, and a Haunter card near the infamous Lavender Town tower. Asch_win also used a magnifying glass to reveal that even the Supporter cards reference specific locations from Pokémon history.

While many card illustrations depict Pokémon in enchanting, dreamlike settings without clear ties to the franchise's lore, some, like a Pikachu variant, are recognizable as cards that can be collected in the real world. Others are unique to Pokémon TCG Pocket, where players have been uncovering these cleverly concealed Easter Eggs.

The Pokémon TCG Pocket community has been buzzing all weekend, meticulously examining other cards for additional references. Notable discoveries include the S.S. Anne cruise liner subtly featured in a Gyarados full art card, and a series of Oddish, Venonat, and Bellsprout cards that weave a narrative set by the seaside Snorlax location in FireRed and LeafGreen.

Since its launch to mobile gaming fans in October, Pokémon TCG Pocket has seen the release of one additional booster expansion set, Mythical Island, bringing the total to four packs available. More sets are expected in the future, with new cards being introduced through Wonder Pick Events and other updates. As Creatures and DeNA continue to unveil cards from various generations, players should stay vigilant for more hidden references.

In the meantime, you can delve into the current Wonder Pick event, spotlighting Charmander and Squirtle. Also, don't miss out on why the developers are being coy about whether pack choice matters.
